Since 2004, the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC), the Ozark RiversSolid Waste Management District (ORSWMD) and host communities throughout the region have been organizing special collections for items like electronic waste, appliances and tires. The district usually funds three to five of these one-day collection events each year. The collections are open to any households in the Ozark Rivers District, including Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties. The materials collected are recycled through event contractors. Most unwanted electronics and appliances, as well as waste tires, are accepted at these events. There is a fee collected for TVs, computer monitors and tires, as the must pay a vendor to properly dispose of these items. All other items are accepted at no cost. Collection events are posted on both the MRPC and ORSWMD websites and advertised in local newspapers.
