Jo Suddes Athlete, now assistant coach While competing, Jared also completed a sports science degree followed by a PGCE teaching qualification. For a few years he taught part-time and lectured while still competing. He then joined the EIS as a strength and conditioning coach. By this time Jared was also married and a father, but he still managed to start to do some athletics coaching in what little spare time he had.

FIRST-HAND VIEW One of the fundamental aspects to Jared’s approach is to instil core values in the athletes he coaches. He believes it is vital that athletes develop a performance attitude and become self-managers. This is established through athletes taking responsibility for time management, organisation, preparation and communication. There is clear pride in being a valuable part of a successful team. It is not only athletes who want to lead the way in their sport. Support teams too are often leaders in their own field and have as much drive, determination and ambition to push the barriers as the athletes have. I have been repeatedly impressed with the passion, the excellence, the performance, the honesty, the genuine care, the values and the communication skills of those I work with. Athletes respect individuals who have clear values of their own, who can build trusting relationships, who are strong but not unyielding and, crucially, who have the ability to see the athlete as a whole person, not just a sportsperson.
