A bowling ball on a plank raised at one end can be used to provide the same force each time. Allow the same ball to impact different bowling balls or other balls of different weights. The descending ball must hit each of the others dead center. Measure the change in speed over time for each ball that is hit. Keep in mind that each ball has zero speed when hit. Once the ball is rolling, you can measure its speed (final speed) by finding how long it takes to cover a measured length of the lane. One or more helpers with stopwatches are needed.
Each time, the descending ball exerts a force on the ball in the gutter. The ball in the gutter exerts an opposite force on the descending one, according to Newton’s third law of motion. Remove the heavier ball and set it aside. Place the other bowling ball back in the gutter as before. Set the lightest ball on the mark on the plank. Release it. What happens to both balls? How do you explain the results? When the heavier ball hits the ball in the gutter, the heavier ball slows down but keeps rolling.
Select two bowling balls that weigh about the same. Place one ball in the gutter about 60 cm (2 ft) from the foul line. Hold the other ball at the mark you made on the plank.
