Based on style, the excavators attributed these wall paintings to the Assyrian king, Esarhaddon. As reconstructed (fig. 6), the outer registers of the patterned frieze show a mirror image arrangement of a stylized lotus and bud garland. Three rows of repeated rosettes fill each of the second and fourth registers. Within the middle third register, a large rectangular panel, a square with incurved sides alternates with a circle decorated with two concentric circles filled with petals, and a target center.

The two shades of red/brown and blue in Cavro’s original works were possibly due to the availability of the color pigments in Beirut (information courtesy of Elizabeth Fontan). Cavro’s copies of the Til Barsip wall paintings were exhibited in 1930 in Paris, but afterwards were mislaid; they were found again in 1961. In Parrot’s book, many of the wall paintings are reproduced in color. For a complete list of these illustrations, see pp. 336–337. 33 Chapter Three.
