No matter how you live, work, and play, everyone produces waste. Most waste reduction efforts may save money, energy and natural resources. That is why it is important to teach children and young adults how solid waste affects their lives, health and protects our environment.
How can we manage our waste? By practicing the six R’s: rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and then recycle. These actions are effective measures that serve as alternatives to disposing waste in local landfills.
In rural areas, services for commonly recycled materials such as paper, aluminum, glass steel, cardboard, and yard waste are not always available. That is why reducing waste in the first place is the best strategy. By rethinking your personal waste stream, refusing what is not needed, and reducing use of single use plastics (bags and bottles) you can take your first steps to… “Be Earth Wise!”
